Groundcovers

groundcovers.jpg By most estimates, the term groundcovers describes a broad assortment of evergreen perennial woody. semi-woody, and herbacious plant varieties. In different parts of the country, different plant material qualifies as groundcover.

The commercial landscape side of our industry relies on a select group of proven hardy performers, most of which will tolerate shade quite nicely. For the home gardener, there is a broad pallet of material that will serve well to cover areas in sun or shade with a low growing attractive habit.

We tend to think of groundcovers as evergreen in most cases, but there is a great selection of striking material that will defoliate and renew itself year after year in your landscape. Some gardeners desire to use groundcovers under established trees, and in other areas where nothing else will grow.

It is good to keep in mind that if nothing is growing there now, that a little help for new plants will be required to establish them. Soil improvement, and fertilizer will pay back the expense in healthy thriving groundcovers.
